Benefits & Comparisons

What You Need To Know, No Matter Who You Rent From

As you research the many RV rental operations out there, you will discover some similarities and many differences.  It is important, especially for the inexperienced RV renter, that you understand these differences.  It will make the difference between a great experience and "an experience".

Apples to Apples

Compare similar equipment.  Let's say a 30' Class C Motorhome.  Some will have slide outs.  Some will not.  Some will have awnings.  Most will not.  Don't be fooled by awnings appearing in pictures on a web site.  It does not mean the actual unit will have one, or if it does, that you can use it.  Some will have two TV's, some only one, and some will have none.  Some will have a V8 engine.  Most will have a V10.  Don't believe that two less cylinders will equal better fuel economy.  The V10 not only has the power necessary for the size of vehicle it is moving, but is far more effecient.  Most of the major rental units have all commercial vinyl flooring.  Good for them (cleanability), bad for you.  None of the sound deadening or insulating qualities provided by carpet.

Base Rates

Rates can appear very different at first glance.  Most of the major rental companies will typically be between $95 to $125 per day, however, everything from there, including mileage, is a la carte as you will see in a moment.

That Crazy Mileage Thing

Mileage becomes very interesting especially between the major rental companies.  One will assume 100 miles per day and charge up front accordingly at $.32 per mile.  The next will offer prepaid non-refundable blocks of 500 miles at $.35 per mile ($175), and charge you $.40 per mile if you exceed your allocated mileage.  Another will offer prepaid non-refundable blocks in any combination of 100, 300 or 500 miles.  Over mileage is charged in blocks as well.  Confused yet?  Don't feel bad.

Generator?

Generator charges vary from included at no extra charge to $3 per hour to your choice of $15 per day or $3 per hour.  Some units have no generator at all.  What is important to understand here is that, unless you are planning to "dry" or "primitive" camp (no hook-ups), you will not likely need a generator at all.

Pets

Most of the major companies allow pets.  Some want additional security deposits and rental or cleaning fees for pets.  Some only threaten additional costs if your pet does damage.  Most of the smaller companies, like us, do not allow pets.  Remember, we don't have all vinyl floors like the big guys.  We realize that this limits our client base somewhat, however, the rest of our clients, especially those with pet allergies, appreciate the knowledge that our coaches have never carried pets.

The REALLY Important Stuff

Unfortunately, the most important things to be aware of are the things most people don't even think about.  The things that will have the single largest impact on your overall experience.  Accessory items.

Almost every RV rental company out there will charge between $100 and $125 for a few basic cookware and utensil items.  Don't be expecting a toaster, coffee maker, or anything like that.

Additionally, they will charge from $50 to $70 per person for basic personal items like pillows, towels and sheets.  Other than a power cord, water hook up hose and sewer hose, no other accessories are provided.  No leveling equipment.  No camping chairs.  No barbeque grill.  No kidding!  Check out our list of included accessory items here.
